Tropical Storm Lala Drenches Hawaii With Heavy Rain And Floods

Tropical Storm Lala Batters Hawaii With Torrential Rains, Dangerous Winds, and Widespread Power Outages

Tropical Storm Lala lashed the Hawaiian islands on August 15 and 16, 2026, dropping torrential rain, whipping trees with fierce gusts, and leaving over 130,000 households without power. According to NBC News, the storm packed top sustained winds of 70 mph and crept northwest at about 15 mph, threatening fragile infrastructure and triggering emergency rescues across the Big Island and neighboring communities.

A Relentless Deluge Across the Big Island

As the storm system skirted past without making a direct landfall, it unleashed catastrophic downpours, particularly across the higher windward slopes of the Big Island. According to NPR, forecasters projected total rainfall amounts reaching nearly three feet, or up to 35 inches in elevated regions dominated by the Mauna Kea volcano. This excessive water volume transformed ordinary waterways into raging torrents and severely compromised steep terrain.

The relentless weather prompted emergency searches after flash floods swept several occupied homes off their foundations in Na’alehu and Wai’ohinu near the southern tip of the island. Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda described the rescue operations as intensely difficult due to rushing water, thick debris, massive boulders blocking roads, and pitch-black conditions.

Widespread Infrastructure Strain and Power Failures

Infrastructure across the island chain buckled under the atmospheric assault. Governor Josh Green confirmed that at least three hospitals were forced to operate on generator power. Utility trackers noted that more than 130,000 households lost electricity across Hawaii’s three largest islands by Sunday morning.

Tragically, Governor Green also reported at least one fatality resulting from a car accident in the South Point area of the Big Island, alongside 19 roofs lost in the storm, the governor said Saturday evening. Transportation crews rushed to clear roadway blockages spanning more than 30 sites.

Community Resilience Amid Severe Weather Threat

Residents across the archipelago relied on deeply ingrained habits of self-reliance to weather the emergency. Bobby Camara, a 75-year-old lifelong resident sheltering just outside Hilo, noted that local gas stations experienced massive rushes as people secured fuel for chainsaws and vehicles. “I think stocking up is part of life over here. … You learn to be self-reliant,” Camara said to NBC News.

In Keaau, Mike Caputo, a local fire captain, prepared his property by testing his generator and filling a 10,000-gallon home water tank. His primary anxieties centered on flash flooding and fallen trees, especially albizia, which can make roads impassable.

What Lies Ahead as Lala Moves West

Tropical storm warnings remained active on Sunday for Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau as the cyclone tracked further west. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center warned that wind speeds atop mountains and on the windward and leeward slopes are often up to 30% stronger than the near-surface winds used to categorize storms.

While the storm weakened slightly to a tropical storm status over the weekend, meteorological models indicate that Lala could regain hurricane strength by midweek once it moves well clear of the western edge of the Hawaiian island chain.
