Tunisian President Kais Saied announced the publication of a new version of the proposed draft constitution to “correct mistakes” and add “a set of clarifications.”
In the new text, Saeed added the phrase “under a democratic system” to Chapter Five, so that “Tunisia becomes part of the Islamic nation, and the state alone must work, under a democratic system, to achieve the goals of pure Islam in preserving life, honor, money, religion and freedom.”
Said said in a speech he addressed to the Tunisian people on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, “The draft that was previously published in the Official Gazette included errors in form and others in arrangement, and they will be fixed and reviewed.”
He explained that «some interpretations of the provisions of the constitution are acceptable and others stem from political calculations and alliances that are no longer hidden from anyone».
Said said, “The tyranny has ended without a return and will never return, not with a constitutional text or any other parliamentary ruling.” The new version of the draft constitution did not include amendments to the president’s powers to enact laws, appoint the government, judges, and make decisions.
Yesterday evening, the Official Gazette published the text of the amendments to the new draft constitution.
The Tunisian president criticized what he described as coordinated campaigns aimed at questioning any choice, explaining that reforms were included to remove any confusion.
Said called on Tunisians to vote “yes” on the new draft constitution so that “the course of the revolution is corrected,” noting that the draft constitution “does not retract basic choices or major principles, because they are principles from the heart of the revolution and the conscience and conscience of the people.”
He also warned voters against accepting any money from any party on the occasion of voting for this upcoming entitlement, as happened, according to him, in 2019, stressing that he “is innocent of any funding.”
Earlier, political and popular forces in Tunisia launched national campaigns to support participation in the referendum on the new constitution on July 25.
On July 25, the Tunisian President, Kais Saied, issued exceptional decisions that included freezing the work of Parliament and dismissing the Prime Minister, Hisham Al-Mashishi, in order to confront the political and economic paralysis in the country.
