A recent Thai study reveals that the consumption of turmeric would be just as effective as the drug treatments usually prescribed to combat indigestion. The result of this study, published in the British Medical Journal, demonstrates that to combat the effects ofindigestion, curcumin (a natural compound present in turmeric), is actually as effective as omeprazole. Omeprazole is a medication usually prescribed to reduce excessacid gastric and thus act on indigestion. However, taking this medication is not without side effects. Indeed, in the event of repeated and lasting intake, and the fact that it acts as an inhibitor of pump (PPI), this medication can have the long-term consequence of increasing the risk of fractures or infections, but also of developing micronutrient deficiencies.

Curcumin, for its part, already known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, is already widely used, particularly in countries ofAsia of South East, as a medicinal remedy. Scientists have just conducted a study to compare the effects of curcumin with those of omeprazole on indigestion.

The researchers carried out tests on 151 patients aged 18 to 70 who suffered from recurrent stomach aches. Three groups were differentiated: the first group was prescribed 2 doses of 250mg of curcumin to be taken 4 times a day. jour as well as a daily placebo capsule; a second had to take a treatment of 20 mg of omeprazole per jour as well as two placebo capsules four times a day; and a last group had to take theensemble treatments from the first two groups, therefore combining the taking of omeprazole and curcumin.

The patients’ symptoms were evaluated after 28 then 56 days: a similar improvement was noted in each of them, after 28 days (concerning heartburn as well as the excessive feeling of satiety in particular), which confirms the effectiveness of curcumin on indigestion. The beneficial effects observed after 56 days were even more notable, for each of these groups.

Other tests will need to be carried out to confirm this effectiveness, in particular by expanding the number of participants but also the period ofobservation. However, these first results are encouraging, and will pave the way for other complementary research.
