Traffic Stop Escalates on East Erie Avenue
Philadelphia police are actively searching for a suspect who injured two law enforcement officers Saturday evening during a violent escape in North Philadelphia. The incident unfolded at approximately 5 p.m. in the 300 block of East Erie Avenue, according to local authorities, marking the second day a Philadelphia police officer was struck by a vehicle in the line of duty.
The sequence of events began when an officer from the city’s 24th District stopped a vehicle for traffic violations. Upon running the vehicle’s information, officers discovered that the driver was wanted on outstanding warrants, which escalated the encounter into a felony vehicle stop. Additional personnel, including a lieutenant, arrived at the scene to assist.
Handcuffed Driver Breaks Free and Accelerates
According to Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace, officers made contact with the driver and successfully placed a handcuff on one of his wrists. The suspect then broke free from the grip and scrambled back into the vehicle. As officers moved in to stop him from driving away, the suspect accelerated rapidly.
Officers Sustain Injuries in Roadway Chaos
One officer was struck by the vehicle and thrown directly to the ground, while a responding lieutenant was also thrown onto the roadway during the chaos. Both law enforcement personnel sustained road burns and abrasions. Inspector Pace stated that neither officer appeared to have suffered broken bones. The injured officers were expected to be treated and released.

Suspect Flees With One Handcuff Attached
Despite the rapid response and the physical struggle, the suspect managed to escape before the arrest could be finalized. Investigators have successfully identified the man, but his name is being withheld while the active investigation proceeds. Authorities confirmed that the suspect drove away with a handcuff attached to one of his wrists, though it remains unclear whether the handcuff is still on him.
Germantown Incident Precedes North Philadelphia Search
Saturday’s incident follows a separate event on Friday in Germantown, where another Philadelphia police officer was similarly struck by a car. Police ask anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect to contact local law enforcement.
