TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Typhoon Doksuri weakened to a tropical storm Friday night following its strong winds and rain left more than a million people without power in southern China.

After making landfall Friday morning in the southern province of Fujian, where at least 400,000 people were evacuated, the meteor flooded streets and brought down power pylons in the province. More than a million homes were left without power, according to the state-run Xiamen Evening News.

The typhoon was downgraded to a tropical storm at 11 p.m. Friday, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV announced.

The authorities had ordered the closure of businesses and the suspension of summer classes, in addition to asking the population not to leave their homes. In the city of Quanzhou, on the country’s southern coast, some 50 minor injuries were reported. Residents shared photos on social media of downed trees with their roots in the air on Saturday morning.

The tropical storm is expected to move inland over China and dump heavy downpours on the capital Beijing.

The typhoon had previously hit Taiwan’s main island and the Philippines’ Luzon, causing landslides, flooding and falling trees. The meteor displaced thousands of people and left 41 dead, including the 27 victims of a passenger ship capsizing. More than 20 other people were still missing, including four coast guards whose boat capsized during a rescue mission in one of the hardest-hit provinces, Cagayan, authorities reported Saturday, adding they were monitoring a new storm.
