A student working a training camp internship with the Buffalo Bills received a surprise $20,000 gift from defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson during a livestream, significantly reducing her student loan burden through an unexpected connection forged on the sidelines.
The Sideline Duties at Highmark Stadium
Posey was assigned to the defensive backs position group during her time with the team. Her day-to-day responsibilities during training camp included managing hydration, treating cuts and turf burns, and monitoring players for more serious injuries.
She also worked the sidelines during the team’s first preseason game. “It was their first game in the new Highmark Stadium,” Posey said. “That made it stressful but also fun.”
The internship presented physical hurdles beyond the fast-paced environment of an NFL sideline. Posey accidentally broke her own elbow and wrist during the placement. However, her Bills preceptors stepped in to help her secure medical treatment and adjusted her daily duties to accommodate the injury. “They were great about it,” she noted.
A Distant Working Relationship
The financial gift carried extra weight because the student and the player barely knew each other. While Posey worked within Gardner-Johnson’s position group, the two had little direct interaction prior to the livestream that prompted the donation.
Reflecting on her interactions with the roster, Posey found the players approachable despite their status. “While they are the best at what they do, they were very humble and appreciative of everything we did,” she said. “They were all really nice — just fun, regular people to be around.”
Reducing the Loan Burden
The $20,000 contribution from Gardner-Johnson will significantly reduce Posey’s loan burden. The gesture highlights how experiential learning opportunities can generate unexpected personal and financial doors for university students stepping into professional sports environments.
