Ukraine: Destroyed Russian amphibious warship in the Black Sea – 2024-03-06 12:27:29

Ukraine destroyed a Russian amphibious warship in the Black Sea in an operation with naval drones, which caused cracks in the ship’s left side, causing the vessel to “start to sink,” Kiev’s military intelligence service said.

In particular, the representative of the Kremlin Dmitry Peskov declined today to comment on the announcement by the Ukrainian armed forces that their forces had sunk the Russian navy amphibious assault ship Tsezar Kunikov off the Russian-controlled Crimean peninsula in Black Sea. The Russian Defense Ministry had earlier announced that Russian forces shot down six Ukrainian drones “over the waters of the Black Sea”.

“The Ukrainian Armed Forces, together with the intelligence unit of the Ministry of Defense, destroyed the large landing ship Tsezar Kunikov. It was in Ukrainian territorial waters near Alupka at the time of the strike,” the Ukrainian military said in a post on the Telegram messaging app.

Alupka, a resort town on the Black Sea, is located near Yalta, on the southern tip of Crimea, which Russian forces seized and annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

Ukraine: How they hit the Russian warship

The Ukrainian military’s intelligence service said it used Ukrainian naval drones, Magura V5s, to strike the ship near the coastal city and that the strikes caused “three significant cracks” on the port side of the ship and that the ship then ” began to sink.”

The agency noted that this is one of the “newest” Russian ships, which can have 87 crew members, and clarified that it was used by the Russia in its war against Georgia in 2008 and more recently in the war in Syria.

The agency also posted a blurry video on the Telegram app that allegedly shows naval drones approaching a large vessel at night and at least one large explosion.

“Tsezar Kunikov suffered a major breach”

Reuters was able to verify that the ship in the video is the Tsezar Kunikov of the Russian Black Sea Fleet based on its mainmast, antenna, bridge and deck. However, he was unable to independently verify when and where this video was taken.

According to iefimerida, some of the footage at the end of the video appears to show major damage and the ship leaning heavily to one side. “In summary, the Tsezar Kunikov suffered a significant breach (…) and began to sink,” the Ukrainian military intelligence service notes in its statement.

A Ukrainian news website published videos showing a plume of smoke rising above the sea off the southern coast of Crimea and helicopters flying overhead.

Ukraine is using unmanned naval drones with explosives to attack Russian warships in a bid to drive them out of parts of the Black Sea to enable Kiev to open a shipping lane along a traditionally key export route.
