UK’s first king penguin chick in a decade hatches during heatwave

London Zoo welcomed eighteen Humboldt penguin chicks to its main pool during a 31C heatwave, while Birdland Park and Gardens in Gloucestershire celebrated the UK’s first king penguin chick hatch since 2014, as wildlife parks across Britain manage soaring summer temperatures.

London Zoo Welcomes Humboldt Penguin Chicks to Penguin Beach

Temperatures reached 31C at London Zoo in Regent’s Park, prompting seven of this summer’s eighteen Humboldt penguin chicks to take their first swim in the main enclosure. The young birds spent their initial weeks in a dedicated nursery pool before joining the 63-strong colony at Penguin Beach, which features a 450,000-litre pool.

Eleven younger chicks remain in the nursery pool, practicing their diving and swimming skills before graduating to the larger enclosure. Staff have already named several of the new arrivals, including Dua Flipa, Toogie, Beau, Dragon, Ray, and Robin.

We couldn’t wait to name the new chicks, and among those graduating to the big pool this week are Dua Flipa, Toogie, Beau, Dragon, Ray and Robin. We feel a bit like a teacher doing the morning register when we reel off all their names.

Conservation Milestones for Coastal Birds

The arrival of eighteen new Humboldt penguins marks a significant milestone in ongoing conservation efforts. Wild populations of these charismatic coastal birds continue to shrink due to habitat loss, overfishing, and climate change.

Birdland Park Celebrates Rare King Penguin Hatch

Meanwhile, in Gloucestershire, Birdland Park and Gardens marked a major breeding milestone by hatching the first king penguin chick in the UK since 2014. The chick weighed 188 grams at birth and is currently being hand-reared by keepers after staff moved the egg to an incubator for safety reasons.

The egg was laid by parent penguins French and Frank. Keepers noted that the young chick has already overcome several early obstacles, including the summer heat.

Managing Extreme Summer Temperatures

At London Zoo, the Met Office recorded 31C heat on Friday, making the 450,000-litre pool an essential cooling resource for the colony.
