UN calls for “de-escalation” in Ukraine

“Alarming escalation of fighting, dozens of civilians have been killed in Ukraine and Russia,” wrote the UN Human Rights Office on the online service X, formerly Twitter. “International humanitarian law prohibits indiscriminate attacks and attacks on civilian facilities.”

500 Russian attacks

Russia attacked Ukraine on Tuesday with around 100 missiles and drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj said there had been 500 Russian missile and drone attacks since Friday last week and called for Russia to be “punished”. According to Ukrainian authorities, the main targets of the attacks were the capital Kiev and its surroundings as well as the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. The Russian side announced attacks on the Belgorod region.

Shortly before, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he wanted to increase attacks on military targets in Ukraine in response to the Ukrainian attacks on Belgorod. According to Russian information, Ukraine carried out another drone attack on the Russian city of Belgorod on Wednesday night.
