United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Friday the UN was working to “reduce restrictions” on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, stressing the importance of doing so as quickly as possible.

During a press conference in front of the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip, in the middle of a line of humanitarian trucks, Guterres declared that there are more than 2 million people under fire in Gaza, without water, without food, without fuel or treatment.

He added: “We have many trucks loaded with all the relief materials that the people of Gaza need,” stressing that loading the trucks represents “the difference between life and death.”

Guterres stressed the importance of getting aid to Gaza as quickly as possible, calling for a humanitarian ceasefire.

He said he had been following announcements of agreements regarding the entry of aid, such as what was announced by the United States and Israel. He announced another agreement between Israel and Egypt, but noted that these agreements contained “some conditions and restrictions” that limit the possibility of their implementation.

“We are working effectively with all parties, as well as Egypt, Israel and the United States, to clarify the conditions and reduce these restrictions in order to bring in these trucks as quickly as possible and in the greatest quantities possible,” he concluded.
