The dream of becoming a mother can often come with some obstacles. Ectopic pregnancy is among them. The condition, considered a risk for women, occurs when the embryo settles and begins to develop outside the uterus, making the pregnancy unfeasible.

Gynecologist and obstetrician Alexandre Rossi explains that, in a normal pregnancy, the egg is fertilized in the fallopian tube and goes towards the uterus, where it remains until the end of the pregnancy.

However, for various reasons, the tube may have some narrowing or blockage, preventing the passage of the embryo. In these cases, gestation does not exceed 16 weeks, well before the time necessary for the fetus to survive.

“About 2% of pregnancies are ectopic, but after the first occurrence, the probability of recurrence is greater”, warns the specialist. “For this reason, pregnant women already diagnosed with a previous ectopic pregnancy should be extra careful”, he says.

Risk factors

  • Previous ectopic pregnancy;
  • Previous surgical procedure, such as an abortion or tubal ligation;
  • Anomalies of the fallopian tubes;
  • Current use of an IUD (intrauterine device).
