Dr. Hisham Tarraf, Professor of Internal Medicine and Allergy at Kasr Al-Ainy Medicine, revealed, during the celebration that was held today, Thursday, on the occasion of World Asthma Day Al-Shaabi, that more than 80% of Egyptian asthma patients do not take the correct treatment, between a cortisone injection, a cold, or antibiotics, and preventive treatments are not determined before crises occur.

He explained that good care prevents the occurrence of crises, adding that 80% of asthma patients do not know how to use the inhaler correctly.

He added that more than 88% of Egyptian patients only go to the doctor when crises occur, adding: “The World Asthma Day is held in May every year to raise public awareness of asthma all over the world, and the Global Asthma Initiative has chosen “Asthma Care for All” as a slogan. For World Asthma Day 2023, to reflect the importance of raising the level of asthma care, to include all patients of all ages and social levels.

He stressed the need for the Global Asthma Initiative to adhere to making specific recommendations related to air pollution and environmental health issues, which primarily affects the health and safety of patients with respiratory system and bronchial asthma, and associations work to improve the lives of people with asthma at the global level, and carry out multifaceted cooperation to improve all aspects of asthma care for patients. and environment.

He explained that 300 million people in the world suffer from asthma, indicating that asthma can cause death if it is not intervened and treated immediately with the correct treatment in times of crisis, stressing that 80% of deaths of asthma patients are in low-income countries, and this represents a heavy burden and our goals. It is treated according to modern international guidelines.

He stressed that asthma must be treated in all its stages to avoid deaths and control asthma, explaining that biological therapy is dealt with by some specific groups of severe cases, and it changes people’s conditions instead of hospitalization, and it is not generalized to all people, and the government must have a role in rationalizing its use for some. Specific categories, adding that it can treat symptoms and control asthma to prevent the occurrence of crises.
