Vienna (OTS) – – “The government’s recent proposals to cap rent increases are not only inadequate, they are also misleading. Under the guise of a so-called “rent brake”, the government is trying to deceive the public with this gift to rent sharks and to protect the real beneficiaries of this policy: the real estate billionaires,” criticizes Roman Hebenstreit, chairman of the transport and service union vida.

“After two years of relentless inflation, which has led to unprecedented rent increases and pushed many citizens to the brink of their financial existence, people are expecting concrete and effective measures to combat inflation. But what the government has presented is just a paper tiger that leaves the increases that have already taken place untouched,” said Hebenstreit.

For the vida union leader, it is a mockery that the proposed cap should only take effect once inflation, the main cause of rent increases, has already fallen again. “This proposal is not only ineffective, but also cynical. It protects those who have already benefited from the exorbitant rent increases and leaves the tenants completely out in the cold,” says Hebenstreit.

Hebenstreit further states: “It is an open secret that real estate billionaires make generous donations to the ÖVP. This proposed law smacks of patronage politics for the super-rich. It’s time the government rethinks its priorities and provides real solutions for the people instead of continuing to line the pockets of property sharks.”

The union vida is therefore calling on the government to withdraw this hypocritical proposal and to present a real rent cap that protects all tenants from further intolerable increases and makes real estate billionaires responsible.
