On May 1, 2023 in Geneva, Mrs. Isabelle Lonvis-Rome, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister for Gender Equality, Diversity and Equal Opportunities, will represent France on the occasion of the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR). The UPR is a general review of each state’s compliance with its international human rights obligations. All States take part every 5 years in this transparency and accountability exercise set up by the United Nations General Assembly.

The Minister will present the progress made in public policies since the previous review, which was held in 2018. She will highlight the results of France’s policy in terms of promoting women’s rights and equality between women and men, great cause of the two five-year terms of the President of the Republic. She will recall the numerous measures taken since 2017 in favor of a more inclusive and tolerant society, in particular concerning our resolute action in the fight against racism, anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination, as well as our policy in favor of the rights of people with disabilities.

On the occasion of this hearing, the Minister Delegate will recall that the universal defense and promotion of human rights are a constant priority for France’s external action. In this context, it deploys in particular an ambitious feminist diplomacy, whose priorities the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs defined on March 8: support for those who defend rights and freedoms in their country ( Marianne Initiative); a fight for freedom of the press, for the abolition of the death penalty and the decriminalization of homosexuality. The Minister will reaffirm France’s attachment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights signed 75 years ago at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, as well as to the essential role of multilateralism and the United Nations in ensuring respect for international law. , human dignity and peace.
