Upgrading Quebec’s Power Infrastructure: Hydro-Québec’s Transmission Line Expansion Project

2023-10-11 21:31:32

Aging infrastructure and growing demand for electricity, Hydro-Québec no longer has a choice, two transmission lines from the 1960s are being dismantled.

“The two lines currently might pass 120,000 volts, while the next one will pass 315,000 volts. It’s not quite triple, but we’re close,” says Jonathan Laporte, regional affairs advisor at Hydro-Québec.

In addition, a new transmission line will be built in eastern Montreal.

“There is the construction of 11 kilometers of line. Construction work on the new line will begin next January for commissioning for the entire project, really, with the entire supply line in July 2025,” he explains.

These projects represent investments of $336 million for the state-owned company.

Quebec needs at least 100 additional terawatt hours of electricity to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the equivalent of half a Hydro-Québec.
