About 40 migrant families arrived at a hotel in Sutton, a small township south of the city of Worcester.
Among the migrants are children and even pregnant women and, it was said, they would have been left for a few hours without certain basic supplies.
The group arrived a few days ago at Logan airport on a flight from Mexico and the majority are from Haiti. They arrived with their entire family on board, were put in a taxi and taken to a hotel in Sutton where several neighbors have come to help.
A Haitian migrant, identified as Luxon, arrived with his children and his pregnant wife and hopes that help can be provided, especially medical.
“There are a lot of people here, a lot of family. I am a migrant and we need many things, help with paper, because I live here with my family,” she said.
Some have had a difficult time communicating because of their language and Luxon, who has his wife pregnant, fears that something could happen to her or one of their children.
“The child needs the doctor, blood came out of his nose, my wife is pregnant and needs the doctor,” he said.
The state is providing lunch and dinner, but breakfast, medical care and hygiene supplies have been donated by some good Samaritans like Bill Frederick, who opined that those who “have been blessed as much as he has, have to give back and it’s not an effort”.
According to Sutton’s city manager, 18 families arrived from the Boston airport on Saturday alone, but city officials didn’t find out until Monday when they returned to City Hall.
State Rep. Joseph McKenna said it’s due to a lack of advance communication from the state.
Last week, the governor of Massachusetts activated 250 members of the National Guard to help with the immigration crisis in different shelters in the state. NBC New England contacted her office and a spokesperson responded that “the activation of the National Guard will help ensure that all housed families have access to basic services.”
The spokesperson also added that they are grateful for the help from the community, but given the speed with which migrants arrive, sometimes the state does not have enough time to notify municipalities that a group of migrants would be on the way.
