Samantha Power, who heads the US Agency for International Development, announced this aid on Tuesday during a visit to the Egyptian city of Al-Arish.

Al-Arish is located about 80 kilometers from the western border of Gaza, and has become a receiving point for international aid before it is packed into trucks and transported to the besieged Strip.

The war between Israel and Hamas caused the closure of many hospitals in the Gaza Strip.

Power used her visit to the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula to emphasize that the United States is committed to enhancing aid and protecting civilians as Israel moves forward with its attack.

“Military operations must be carried out in a way that distinguishes between combatants and civilians,” Power said.

The United States supported the Israeli attack, but urged Israel to work to reduce civilian casualties. Washington also called for a humanitarian truce in order to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza.

The truce, which lasted for a week and ended on Friday, saw a slight increase in the entry of aid into Gaza, including fuel shipments.
