US Fleets Commit to Over 4,500 Electric Trucks in September 2026

In September 2026, the zero-emission commercial vehicle sector recorded its largest cumulative order volume to date, with fleets across the United States committing to over 4,500 medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks. According to deployment updates from Environmental Defense Fund, the month’s activity centered heavily on scaling Class 8 freight capabilities and medium-duty urban delivery infrastructure.

Tesla and Harbinger Secure Large Electric Truck Orders

  • Catalyst Mobility and Smart Freight Centre launched the ZET SCALE initiative, aggregating demand for an order of 2,500 Tesla Semis to nearly double the existing U.S. electric Class 8 fleet.
  • Startup Harbinger secured a direct order for 2,000 electric delivery trucks from FedEx (NYSE: FDX), following a prior $160 million funding round contribution.
  • Regional deployments expanded significantly, including 25 Tesla Semis deployed by Google in Texas and 50 units added by IMC Logistics in California.

ZET SCALE Aggregate Order Doubles Class 8 Fleet

The market expansion was led by a massive joint initiative from Catalyst Mobility, formerly known as CALSTART, alongside the Smart Freight Centre. The organizations announced the largest single Class 8 electric truck order to date. The purchase order includes 2,500 Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) Semis, alongside optional allocations from manufacturers such as PACCAR (NASDAQ: PCAR) subsidiary Kenworth and Volvo Group (OTCPK: VLVLY).

This volume aggregation targets major freight operators including PepsiCo (NASDAQ: PEP) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) via the ZET SCALE alliance. By pooling purchasing power, the initiative aims to lower upfront capital costs for operators, narrowing the price gap with traditional diesel vehicles. Initial deployment phases concentrate on heavy freight corridors in California, Texas, the Pacific Northwest, Chicago, Atlanta, and the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.

Startup Harbinger Secures FedEx Fleet Expansion

In the medium-duty sector, commercial vehicle startup Harbinger expanded its footprint through a definitive supply agreement with FedEx (NYSE: FDX). The logistics giant placed an order for 2,000 electric delivery trucks, scheduled for full delivery by the end of 2027.

This commercial agreement deepens an existing financial relationship between the two entities. FedEx previously contributed $160 million to Harbinger’s corporate funding rounds. Currently, FedEx operates 53 Harbinger electric vehicles in its active fleet.

Regional Deployment Corridors Across Texas and California

Alongside multi-state alliance orders, corporate fleets initiated targeted regional rollouts during September. Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) subsidiary Google partnered with Nevoya and the Center for Green Market Activation to deploy 25 electric Tesla Semis alongside dedicated charging infrastructure in Texas. The trucks are scheduled to operate along a designated electric freight corridor between Houston and Dallas. Nevoya and the Center for Green Market Activation plan to deploy an additional 38 trucks through the same commercial framework.

Meanwhile, IMC Logistics incorporated 50 Tesla Semis into its California operating network. The order includes a combination of standard configurations offering up to 325 miles of range and long-range variations capable of up to 500 miles per charge. The vehicles are slated to handle local drayage operations and regional freight routes connecting Southern California ports with inland distribution hubs.
