Valery Garbuzov, director of the Institute for the US and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has been removed from his post, two scientists who know him told Meduza.

On the morning of September 1, Garbuzov was removed “by the decision of the founder,” says one of Meduza’s interlocutors. On the website of the Institute for the USA and Canada, the scientist is still listed director. The suspension has not been officially announced. Garbuzov himself declined to comment.

Before being suspended, Garbuzov published column in Nezavisimaya Gazeta, where he debunked the myths about the West that Russian propagandists use, and also outlined Russia’s place in the world. In an article published on August 29, the scientist, among other things, writes that throughout history, the “charge of foreign policy expansionism” has not left Russia. First, the leaders of the country constructed the myth of world communism, and then came up with several others, including the thesis of American imperialism.

Garbuzov believes that the myths offered by the current Russian government are propagated by the state propaganda machine: “well-paid professional political manipulators and participants in numerous television talk shows.” Among these myths, he says, is the idea of the crisis of globalization and the “Anglo-Saxon” world, the anti-colonial revolution, the loss of American dominance, the great world anti-American revolution and the decline of the West.

“The purpose of all this (creation of state foreign policy myths – approx. “Jellyfish”) is quite obvious – plunging its own society into a world of illusions and accompanied by great-power and patriotic rhetoric, the undisguised and deliberate indefinite retention of power at any cost, the preservation of property and the political regime by the current ruling elite and the oligarchy integrated with it, ”the column says.

The publication was criticized by members of the propaganda media. In particular, the radio host “Komsomolskaya Pravda” Sergei Mardan compared her with the posts of Igor Strelkov (Girkin), and the publication “Politnavigator” collected all outraged reviews of the article in a note marked “national traitors” and “SVO”.

Whether Garbuzov’s removal was connected with the publication is not known for sure. Meduza sent a request to the Institute for the US and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. At the time of publication, the institute did not provide a response.
