When the man woke up, the apartment was already heavily smoked. The 38-year-old still managed to escape from the apartment on his own and raised the alarm for a neighbor, who notified the emergency services.

Luckily, the Salzburg man had closed his apartment door beforehand. This meant that no smoke might penetrate the stairwell and the apartment block (36 apartments) did not have to be evacuated.

The Salzburg fire department arrived a short time later, located the source of the fire and was able to quickly extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is still unclear.

The Salzburger told the firefighters that his cat was in the apartment. The already unconscious cat was found a little later. Red Cross forces administered oxygen to the animal, the cat came to and was taken to an animal hospital by the fire department. After briefly clarifying whether there was smoke poisoning, the apartment owner was able to leave the Salzburg University Hospital overnight.
