A 59-year-old tenant has died following a residential fire at a house on Pelargonienweg in Vienna’s Donaustadt district on Friday evening, October 31, 2026.
The Vienna Professional Fire Department (Berufsfeuerwehr Wien) received the alarm at approximately 8:00 p.m., deploying units alongside the voluntary fire department of Wien-Breitenlee (Freiwillige Feuerwehr Wien-Breitenlee) to the garden settlement area. Upon arrival, emergency crews found thick smoke billowing from the property, with flames already emerging from a doorway.
“The emergency services deployed a firefighting line each from the front and back of the building into the property under breathing apparatus. Simultaneously with firefighting, the building was searched for people present,” stated Lukas Schauer of the professional fire department.
During the search, firefighters located the 59-year-old tenant inside the structure without a pulse. Immediate resuscitation efforts were initiated, but they ultimately proved unsuccessful. A emergency doctor (Notarzt) subsequently pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Emergency Response and Personnel
The nighttime operation involved a substantial deployment of emergency resources to secure the area and extinguish the flames before the fire could spread to neighboring structures in the garden settlement.
Authorities confirmed that a total of seven emergency vehicles and 33 personnel participated in the operation. Firefighters utilized specialized equipment, including breathing apparatus, to navigate the heavy smoke conditions inside the single-family home while conducting simultaneous search and suppression operations.
Investigation Into the Kitchen Fire
According to police statements, the blaze is believed to have broken out in the kitchen area of the residence. Current investigative findings point toward negligence as the probable cause of the fire. Authorities have explicitly noted that there are currently no indications or evidence pointing toward any third-party involvement or foul play.
