Vienna (OTS) – At the Curia meeting of resident doctors in Vienna on Monday, October 16, 2023, Naghme Kamaleyan-Schmied was elected as the new Curia Chair. “I would like to thank the members of the Curia for their trust and am convinced that from now on we will work constructively in the interests and interests of our colleagues,” said the newly elected Vice President and Chairwoman of the Curia.

Naghme Kamaleyan-Schmied is a general practitioner with a practice in the 21st district of Vienna. She has been working as a representative in professional politics since 2017. Before being elected as Chairwoman of the Curia of Resident Doctors of the Medical Association for Vienna, she was the first deputy chairwoman of the Curia since 2022. She has also been active in professional politics since 2022 as the second deputy chairman of the Federal Curia for resident doctors of the Austrian Medical Association.

“Our commitment and focus as a curia is now focused on the upcoming negotiations on the health insurance contract as well as other important professional policy issues, which we will now work on with great commitment,” explains Kamaleyan-Schmied. She was also pleased that she would now be a female doctor represented on the executive board of the Vienna Medical Association. “A sign that has been necessary for a long time.”

At the meeting, the Curia elected Paul Schönfeld as the successor to Curia Chairman Naghme Kamaleyan-Schmied as first deputy. He is a specialist in internal medicine and rheumatology as well as a general practitioner and runs a health insurance practice in Vienna’s 7th district. “I run a solo practice at a time when there are more and more large practices. “We need fair health insurance rates quickly to make the profession more attractive for young colleagues,” explains the 44-year-old, one of his goals.

It is also important to “improve the framework conditions in health insurance offices so that family and work are compatible”. The new deputy continued: “The experienced colleagues have so much knowledge that they can help young doctors to set up or take over a practice. It is the task of the medical association to mediate between them in order to strengthen care in the long term.

The elections of the Curia Chairwoman and the 1st Deputy have shown that the Curia is ready to “resolutely stand up for the interests of all practicing doctors again,” concluded Kamaleyan-Schmied.
