On Monday, the heart of Verviers was the scene of a major fight between several young people attending school in the heart of the former wool town. A scene that got people talking on social networks. Around ten young people would be affected by this affair.
“We were warned of a fight taking place at Place Verte, Monday, during the day. A fight for which we do not yet have much information. There were victims, including two serious ones, who were taken to the hospital. An investigation has been launched. We have carried out research to identify the people involved. We have also deprived of liberty two young people, minors”, explains Gilles de Villers Grand Champ, division prosecutor of Verviers.
As for the City of Verviers, we do not intend to let this type of event pass. “It’s a problemwhich is quite disturbing and unacceptable, this kind of settling of scores between students and we will investigate as best we can”explains Alexandre Loffet, acting mayor of Verviers.
Not an isolated case
This type of fight between students is not, however, the first to take place in Verviers. A few weeks ago, two other big arguments broke out inside but also outside two other schools. A situation which raises more and more questions. “On had already set up a safety commission system with the schools, but not all were there. Here, we are going to target schools that are having problems to talk about them confidentially. But, we would like to be alerted earlier by schools before arriving at this type of scenario. We want students to be safe in and out of schools. We are also seeing a new gaming phenomenon which consists of wrestling. In the meantime, police patrols are increased. As well as raising awareness among schools, so that they can warn usnnent upstream”adds the ff mayor
So let’s hope that schools will hear the message and that this safety commission will help avoid other such major disputes. (Océane Gaspar)
