Volkswagen is recalling 208,724 vehicles in the United States due to a potential steering rack defect that could compromise steering control. The recall, announced on Sept. 11, includes certain models of the Volkswagen Atlas, Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi Q3.
Affected Models and Defect Details
The recall affects 2018-2019 Volkswagen Atlas, 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan and 2019-2021 Audi Q3 vehicles. The issue is caused by a steering rack mounting bolt that may fracture if moisture penetrates the area and causes corrosion. This failure could result in the steering rack being attached to the vehicle’s subframe at only one point.
According to the Volkswagen recall notice, “A broken steering rack housing can result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.”
Warning Signs and Remediation
Volkswagen states that failures are most likely to happen during low-speed maneuvers or parking when steering loads are high. The company advises owners to listen for knocking or unusual metallic rattling noises coming from the front axle area as potential indicators of the issue.
To resolve the defect, dealers will replace the right steering rack mounting bolt with a new one featuring a highly corrosion-resistant polymer coating. This service will be provided to vehicle owners at no cost.
