in 2018 Vivian He was finishing his university degree in business administration and already thought that he needed to look for something more stable and financially secure. She knew that volleyball could not give her the stability that she needed and she began to look for better options for her future. “I was already determined to search, I wanted something more stable for me.” Along with these concerns, an event occurred that marked the subsequent decision of the Peruvian where a teammate was injured and the club could not pay her 100% of her recovery. “At that time I did not comment on it but it was something that made me think a lot about my future”he tells us.

By pure chance and fate, on those job search pages Vivian He saw the call for an international airline for stewardesses and applied because it caught his attention. Two days later they would be calling her to inform her that she would pass the first filters and her training. It was at that moment that Baella he collided with the harsh reality that given the time involved in this job he would have to give up volleyball. At the age of 26, he said goodbye to the fields and found something in the world of aviation that he really liked. “I felt that this was my place, where I felt comfortable and myself”says today excitedly as if time had not passed since that day she saw herself in her uniform for the first time.

This new stage of his life brought him many changes. Vivian does not have the routine life of others, one week she is here, others she is flying but that has led her to value much more the moments she has with her family and friends. In addition, she has developed skills that she did not have before, and now she is grateful. “I remember when I was a player I always wanted to win and I would get impatient when someone gave up a ball. But now I feel that this has changed in me and I like it”.

When asked about what he misses most about playing volleyball at a professional level, he takes his time and thinks before answering with a smile that is undoubtedly due to the fact that in his mind he has remembered pleasant moments that the sport has given him. brought and answers very confidently that he misses being on the field with the coliseum full of people cheering. “Sometime it has happened to me that I have dreamed that I am playing and I wake up with nostalgia of having lived those times” and there is no way to forget why.

Vivian was part of that generation of Peruvian volleyball that brought joy back to the country after many years of neglect of this sport. The team commanded by the historic Natalia Málaga participated in world, South American, Bolivarian and in the first Youth Olympic Games bringing home the bronze medal, and placing Peru among the greatest in international volleyball.

“Natalia had a passion for volleyball that was incredible and that she sought to transmit to us in each training session to give her all in each game”, Baella remembers. The former volleyball player also adds that at that time they were preparing to be ready to face any championship or selection that comes their way. “For us the important thing was to play well and if we won better, but if we lost it would be playing what we knew”. This team had as rivals teams like Japan, Belgium, Singapore, Argentina and the Dominican Republic, among others, and faced them without feeling less.

Today Vivian believes that there was a setback in terms of the level of the selection because the Federation did not know how to respect processes and that has been affected by the lack of results in recent years. “Now the other countries have improved a lot, they are stronger. The girls have to give 100% on the pitch to regain the respect that they had for our team”. The Peruvian does not see in her future playing volleyball again at a professional level, but she does not rule out one day working in the administrative part of the Federation to help improve the conditions of the players.

With a great future ahead of her, Vivian Baella appreciates every opportunity and experience that volleyball gave her and that she does not forget. Today she is the protagonist of a new story with trips, flights and airports to discover and enjoy. Let the takeoff begin.
