The tarmac at Montpellier Méditerranée Airport was meant to be the stage for a grand debut this Thursday, November 5, 2026. Instead, a torrential downpour forced the ceremonial festivities under cover, but the message remained loud and clear: Volotea has officially planted its flag in the Hérault region. By stationing an Airbus A320 permanently at the hub, the Spanish budget carrier is signaling a long-term commitment to transforming Montpellier into a primary gateway for Southern France.
A Strategic Expansion for Montpellier Méditerranée
The move is more than just a new coat of paint on a hangar. For the airport, which has set its sights on reaching 2.5 million passengers by 2030, the arrival of a dedicated base acts as a massive accelerant. As reported by Métropolitain, the partnership is designed to scale operations rapidly. With the base now operational, Volotea plans to increase its capacity by 22% in 2027, putting 420,000 seats into the market.
Carlos Muñoz, CEO of Volotea, arrived in Montpellier alongside France director Gilles Gosselin to confirm that this is only the beginning. The airline, which has been a presence in Montpellier since 2012, is looking to move from its current 14 routes to a target of 30. The economic ripple effect is immediate: the establishment of the base directly creates 30 jobs, with an additional 160 indirect roles supporting the increased flight volume.
Carrier Launches New Routes and Expands Current Season Service
The carrier isn’t waiting for the long term to show its hand. While announcing two new summer 2027 routes to Malaga and Bari, the airline is simultaneously ramping up service for the current season. Starting this Friday, November 6, passengers can fly to Madrid, with flights to Tenerife South beginning November 8 and Lanzarote on December 19.
Emmanuel Brehmer, the director of the Montpellier platform, noted that the appetite for these routes is already exceeding expectations. “I can announce today that the flights this Friday to Madrid are nearly full, and the Sunday flight to Tenerife is already sold out,” Brehmer confirmed during the inauguration.
Connecting the Regions to the European Map
Volotea, qui se présente comme la première compagnie pour les vols intérieurs en France, entend s’appuyer sur sa nouvelle base à Montpellier pour renforcer la connectivité de l’aéroport. The Montpellier-Nantes route, in particular, remains one of the most profitable in their portfolio, serving as a blueprint for how they intend to capture regional demand.
The ambition to reach 30 destinations is tied to a broader vision of international integration.
The Road to 2.5 Million Passengers
Scaling to 2.5 million passengers requires not just planes, but the ground infrastructure to match.
As the airline looks toward 2027 and beyond, the focus remains on incremental growth. The goal is to reach 900,000 total seats offered by Volotea alone, a figure that would represent a substantial portion of the airport’s total traffic.
