Volvo is the first automobile manufacturer to use renewable fuel for intercontinental sea transport. The ships of the Swedish automobile manufacturer’s logistics partner use the fatty acid methyl ester known as “biodiesel”. This reduces CO2 emissions by up to 84 percent, which corresponds to around 55,000 tons of CO2 per year.
In the future, Volvo will rely on the use of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). These are compounds of a fatty acid and methanol. The fuel, known as biodiesel, is obtained from renewable and sustainable sources such as used cooking oil. No raw materials related to palm oil or palm oil production are used. (awm)
