« IChoices must be made to protect the people who need it most. » In an interview given to the daily West France and published this Saturday, March 30, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, assures that he will not touch the care of long-term illnesses (ALD) to find savings after the announcement of the slippage in the deficit in 2023. As a reminder, on Tuesday March 26, INSEE revealed that France’s public deficit had soared to 5.5% of GDP in 2023, compared to 4.9% expected by the government.

But, for the minister, there is no question of making savings on ALD, which are an “essential pillar of solidarity”. “But it is precisely because we want to protect these sick people – there are twelve million of them – that we must think more generally about the financing of our social model,” he continued, insisting on the need to make “ choice “.

On the other hand, Bruno Le Maire announced that daily allowances would be reformed, while “sick leave has increased by 10% since Covid”. “This debate must be opened this year in order to fight against abuse,” he said.

“We earn less, we spend less”

The objective, according to the Minister of the Economy, is to “guarantee the reduction below the 3% deficit in 2027” and, in fact, to work on “necessary” savings avenues in 2024. “We earn less , we spend less,” he insists.

Indexations, and in particular those of pensions, represent 25 billion euros of expenditure this year.

For Bruno Le Maire, an appointment has been made “within ten days” to present “the new deficit and debt forecasts” during the presentation of the stability program to the Council of Ministers.
