“We were given the first one on Tuesday, but it was soon followed by…”

Two years ago, speed cameras were installed on the N755 passing through Gingelom in Limburg. To avoid fines, drivers must not exceed 70 km/h. However, the cameras were not active until October 2022, and some drivers, like resident Dominic Sanasi, were not aware of their activation. After receiving eight fines within a week, Dominic believes that fines should be proportional to the offense, and he may take legal action.

“After a while, it turned out that the cameras weren’t active. From time to time, we heard that they were but it never turned out to be true”, explains Dominic Sanasi, a resident.

But what was true for a time has not been true since October 2022. And for good reason, the municipality of Gingelom has indicated it on its website: the control is active. The problem ? Some were unaware, just like Dominic.

“We received a first fine last Tuesday. I paid for it immediately, but shortly afterwards I received a second, a third and a fourth…”, explains the driver. In total, Dominic and his wife received eight fines between March 2 and March 9 for a sum of €63 each.

“Sometimes we speed up a bit more and it’s not allowed, but it’s not like we’re killers, is it? I am ready to pay a fine, but no more. I didn’t even have the opportunity to adapt my driving”, believes Dominic who is not the only one in the case.

For the couple, “the fine must be proportional to the offense committed”. Karolien and Dominic considering going to court.

In conclusion, the installation of speed cameras on the N755 in Gingelom has caused frustration among drivers like Dominic and his wife, who were caught off guard by the sudden activation of the cameras after years of inactivity. While they acknowledge the importance of safe driving, they argue that the fines they received were disproportionate to their offense. It remains to be seen whether they will pursue legal action, but this case serves as a reminder to always be aware of updated regulations and road rules in your area. Drive safely!
