Hiccups can be bothersome for many people, however, some have recurring episodes of hiccups, and it occurs when a sudden contraction of the diaphragm causes the muscles in your chest and abdomen to vibrate, then the glottis, or the part of the throat where the vocal cords are located, closes. That’s the air noise from your lungs, or the “hiccup” sound.

Below, we list the causes of hiccups, and some ways to help you get rid of them, according to healthline and medicalnewstoday.

Why do we get hiccups?

It can occur as a result of:

– Eat a heavy meal.

A sudden change in temperature.

Feeling tense.

Drinking soft drinks or alcohol.

– Chewing gum.

However, doctors associate frequent hiccups with several conditions, and these include:

Gastrointestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, small bowel obstruction, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Respiratory diseases, such as pleurisy in the diaphragm, pneumonia or asthma.

Excessive alcohol consumption.

Conditions that affect the central nervous system, such as traumatic brain injury, encephalitis, brain tumor or stroke.

Conditions that irritate the vagus nerve, such as meningitis, pharyngitis or goiter.

Psychological reactions, including sadness, agitation, anxiety, stress and shock.

Conditions that affect metabolism, including hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia and diabetes.

Liver and kidney problems.

How to get rid of hiccups?

If it does not go away within a few minutes, here are some home remedies that may be helpful:

1. Gargling with ice water for one minute. The cold water will help soothe any irritation of the diaphragm.

2. It is best to suck on a small piece of ice.

3. Breathe slowly into a paper bag. This increases carbon dioxide in your lungs, causing the diaphragm to relax.

4. Holding your breath also helps increase carbon dioxide levels.

5. If you find yourself hiccuping a lot, you should eat smaller meals, and reduce soft drinks and soft foods.

6. It is recommended to go to the specialist doctor if the hiccup persists for a long time.
