When a fool copies, he gets a nonsense

On November 27, 1977, the A Fondo program, on Spanish Television, broadcast an interview between Joaquín Soler Serrano and Salvador Dalí. They talked about the artist’s “greed” for dollars, the monarchy as a genetic phenomenon, the North American hyper-realists and the relationship between photography and painting, among other issues.

In black and white, the painter said these things:

“Every day I am more anti-daliniano. As I admire myself more, I find that I am a real catastrophe. I have said it many times: if there were two thousand Picassos, thirty Dalís, fifty Einsteins, then the world would be practically uninhabitable. But don’t be scared, there aren’t any”.

“The things we see are in our soul, they are not in things. In other words, for example, if Velázquez copies a photograph, the best he can, he gets a Velázquez. If a fool copies a photograph exactly, he gets a fool. If Dalí faithfully copies a photograph, he gets a Dalí. Personality is absolutely impossible to avoid.”

“Suicides are almost always people who were born imperfectly and want to return to the lost paradise that was the total colloidal maternal juices.”

(About his older brother, also called Salvador, who died in 1903 at the age of two, shortly before the painter was born): “He died of meningitis and seemed to show great intelligence. He has done a very good and terrible thing to me at the same time my family, he called me the same name as the dead brother, Salvador. And so, to differentiate myself from the dead brother, I had to commit all those eccentricities to constantly affirm that I was not the other dead brother, that I was Dalí, the living Dalí”.

“I would have preferred, in a selfish way, (to live in) the Italian Renaissance, but since I am a fan of modern technology and information, we live in truly unique moments in the history of humanity, especially in biology and in nuclear physics”.

(Denying a supposed bad relationship with Joan Miró): “I’m much more interested in talking, or being in contact, with people who think the opposite of what I think than with those who think the same thing I think.”
