The new central defender of FC Barcelona, Iñigo Martínez, stated this Thursday in his presentation as a new culé player that before Barça’s call “the rest of the teams remain in the background”.

The 32-year-old central defender, who arrives at zero cost after the end of his contract with Athletic Club, confessed the problems he has encountered on the pitch every time he has played at the Camp Nou as a visitor: “If I’m honest, every time I’ve come here, I’ve suffered. Iñigo Martínez signed a contract until 2025 with Barça, which he considered “the best team in the world”, and in which he will have Xavi Hernández as coach. “Watching Xavi play was amazing and a joy, having him as a coach I don’t even tell you anymore.”
Iñigo Martínez only made 15 La Liga appearances for Athletic last season due to a plantar fascia injury.
Trained in the Real Sociedad academy, Martínez made his debut with the San Sebastian team in the elite of Spanish football, before signing for Athletic Bilbao in 2017.
The 32-year-old player arrives at Barça to strengthen the Barça defense after the departures of Gerard Piqué and Jordi Alba.
With Athletic, Iñigo Martínez won the Super Cup in 2021 and reached the Copa del Rey final twice.
UEFA fines FC Barcelona for irregularities within the framework of the Financial Fair Play
FC Barcelona and other European clubs such as Manchester United, were fined by UEFA for accounting irregularities and violation of the Financial Fair Play (FFP) during the 2022/2023 season, the European football body announced this Friday.
Barcelona, current champion of the Spanish League, was sanctioned with 500,000 euros for “erroneously declaring in the financial year 2022, benefits from the disposal of intangible assets (other than player transfers) that are not a relevant income according to the regulations”.
United, meanwhile, was fined 300,000 euros ($335,000) for failing to meet the financial balance requirement.
The FFP regulations, introduced in 2010, oblige clubs not to have losses of more than 30 million euros in a period of three years.
Last year was the last in which these regulations were in force by UEFA, before the regulations were softened for the next three seasons.
Other clubs such as Inter Milan, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco, Roma and Marseille escaped sanction after meeting their respective targets set jointly with UEFA.
The Belgian Royal Antwerp and the Turkish Trabzonspor received the highest fines, of up to two million euros each, of which 300,000 are fixed, and the rest depending on the fulfillment of financial objectives.
