Using the SSD as an extension of VRAM to optimize Ray Tracing
Ray Tracing, while revolutionary in terms of visual realism, has high demands on system resources. Faced with this challenge, Microsoft offers an innovative solution: the use of SSD as an extension of the video memory (VRAM) of the GPU.
This approach aims to minimize bottlenecks by leveraging the speed of SSDs to improve the gaming experience, including reducing loading times and optimizing Ray Tracing processing. Activating this feature could therefore allow better use of Ray Tracing without compromising game performance.
In a document titled “Systems and Methods for Processing Level of Detail of Ray Tracing Acceleration Structure,” Microsoft outlines its vision for integrating SSD into the game rendering process. This initiative aims to respond to the increase in demand for VRAM memory due to new structures associated with Ray Tracing. By leveraging the high processing speed of SSDs, Microsoft hopes to optimize this technology to provide a smoother gaming experience.
Mounted directly on the back of the graphics card, the SSD could well be tomorrow’s solution for using your motherboard’s PCIe port more efficiently. In the example shown by AMD, we find an RTX 4060 Ti, which therefore does not use the 16 lanes available on the PCIe port (16 lanes). The SSD therefore allows the use of the 8 additional lanes to fully exploit the electrical power provided by the motherboard.
