organization held global health A press conference on the sidelines of the Sixth Brussels Conference “Health and the Impact of the Social and Economic Crisis in Syria” today, Friday, May 6th.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, said: Today, approximately one in three people in Syria suffers from internal displacement, in addition to limited access to health care and other basic services, as 90% of the population suffers from poverty, and the population is affected by diseases. The situation is exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, and the protracted crisis in Syria and the deteriorating social and economic conditions are pushing millions of other people into extreme poverty, and increasing their exposure to multiple health threats. This virtual side event, hosted by the World Health Organization and the Italian Cooperation Agency The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) are focusing on the new multilateral partnerships and actions now needed to revitalize Syria’s deeply troubled health care system.
Al-Mandhari explained that 75% of families suffer from the inability to purchase their living necessities, meet their living needs, and live in inappropriate sanitary conditions.
The conference was attended by Dr. Ahmed bin Salem Al-Mandhari, Director of the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Khaleda Bouzar, Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Director and Regional Director of the United Nations Development Program for the Arab States, Luca Maestriberi, Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, and Dr. Mazen Kawara, Country Director of the Syrian American Medical Society, and Dr. Mike Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program
