We often resort to looking at the clock when we really can’t sleep, but a new study confirmed that this will hinder the process and make it more difficult.

In a recent study of nearly 5,000 people, researchers from Indiana University discovered that watching a watch while trying to sleep made participants more likely to have trouble sleeping.

Professor Spencer Dawson, in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, said: “We found that time monitoring exacerbates symptoms of insomnia. The more stressed you are, the more difficult it is to sleep.”

“The only thing people can do is not look at their watch, give up the smartwatch, put the phone away so they don’t check the time,” Dawson said.

According to the researchers, trying to avoid time-monitoring behavior may help patients sleep better and reduce the use of sleep aids.
