Why did Apple remove the SIM card slot from the iPhone 14?

Kaiann Drance, vice president of iPhone marketing at Apple Speaking at the iPhone 14 launch event, “With an eSIM, you can quickly transfer an existing cellular plan or get a new cellular plan.”

Drans also added that the eSIM can make the device “More secure,” stating, “People can’t remove the physical SIM card if your iPhone is lost or stolen.”

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also stated that eSIMs have “significant security benefits.” Some perpetrators have been known to steal physical SIM cards and switch them to another phone to “use them.” Access someone’s data and reset their account, according to the FCC. The eSIM may mitigate this risk because “You can’t steal without stealing your phone.”

In theory, eliminating the SIM slot might have another benefit: it leaves more room for a larger battery or other phone features. Apple that is always trying to make the device thinner

While removing the SIM slot might not be the equivalent of Apple’s decision to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack, it caused some murmurs on social media.

In particular, international travelers frequently use it to change their physical SIM in different locations and may travel to places where eSIMS is not yet supported by carriers, for example in mainland China.
