In Russia, the growth of car sales in the secondary market continues. However, finding a reliable used car can often be quite a challenge, especially for a beginner. Whatcar.com and the insurance company MotorEasy decided to help drivers with a difficult choice. To do this, they conducted a study in which 25 thousand owners of budget segment cars in the UK took part.
Motorists were required to answer the question of what problems they found in cars over the past two years. On this basis, a rating of cars that break down most often was compiled. All these cars can now be bought without any problems in Russia, moreover, some of them are in very high demand on our secondary market.
Volkswagen Golf (2003-2009)

According to the results of the study, the Volkswagen Golf with a diesel engine was recognized as the most unreliable hatchback. During the survey, it was found that more than half of the owners (53%) encountered breakdowns in the car. The most common complaint is suspension problems (27%). Drivers also had problems with the body, brakes and fuel system.
The only plus is the repair time. In most cases, faulty machines spent less than one week in the service. The average check for work is £300 (34,086 rubles at the current exchange rate). True, some motorists (14%) had to pay up to £500 (56,810 rubles) in the service. In Russia, you can easily find a diesel Golf on the secondary market. The price for the 2004 model will be about 520,000 rubles. More recent cars will cost about 850,000 rubles.
Peugeot 308 (2013–2021)

The Peugeot 308 diesel engine is in high demand in the UK aftermarket, the study notes. The main advantages are stylish design and low prices for a used car. However, experts advise potential customers to think seriously before buying this French car on the secondary market. The fact is that about 44% of hatchback owners have recently been forced to contact service centers due to various problems with the car. According to 71% of respondents, work on the car lasted less than one day. Most drivers were forced to pay the craftsmen between £51 and £500 (5,794 to 56,810 rubles).
In Russia, buying a diesel Peugeot 308 with a mileage of 2018 will cost an average of 1,200,000 rubles.
Opel Astra (2009–2015)

The opposite situation has developed with the Opel Astra hatchback. In this car, the gasoline version was not as reliable as the diesel version of the model. Thus, more than 40% of the owners of a German car with a gasoline engine reported visiting service centers over the past two years. The most common problems in the car were related to the brakes, air conditioning and engine. Despite these problems, hatchbacks remained on the move and could get to the service on their own, without the help of a tow truck. In 70% of cases, Opel Astra repairs cost the owners £300 (34,086 rubles). All work took the masters no more than a week.
In our secondary market, you can find many offers for the sale of used Opel Astra. On average, a car manufactured in 2011–2012 will cost 600,000 rubles.
Audi A3
Immediately 39% of the owners of Audi A3 hatchbacks, which were produced from 2003 to 2013, complained about problems with their cars. Most often, the owners of German models were forced to contact the service due to malfunctions associated with the suspension and electrics. In 40% of cases, the repair of the car lasted one day. The average check is £300 (34,086 rubles).
In our country, a used Audi A3 2011-2012 model year will cost an average of 680,000 to 950,000 rubles. Customers should not have problems finding such cars on the used car market.
Renault Megane (2008–2016)

Renault Megane is traditionally considered the most popular car among novice drivers in the UK. Now the title of one of the most unreliable budget cars has been added to this unofficial title. Claims to this hatchback arose from 39% of owners. The main complaints are frequent problems with the brakes, fuel system, gearbox and suspension.
And only for 20% of drivers the repair was free. The rest of the motorists were forced to pay for the work from £500 to £1500 (from 56,810 to 170,430 rubles).
Another disadvantage is that 60% of the cars stood in the service for more than a week. In Russia, Renault Megane is not as popular as in the UK, but the number of offers on the secondary market is still very high. For a car manufactured in 2012–2013, you will have to pay a little less than 700 thousand rubles.
Skoda Octavia (2004–2013)

The Skoda Octavia liftback is popular in the Russian used car market. However, British experts have questions about the reliability of the car. And we are talking about both petrol and diesel versions of the car. As a result of the survey, it turned out that over the past two years, 33.3% of drivers had problems with the Skoda Octavia. Most of the complaints were about the operation of the air conditioner and the battery. Other motorists spoke about problems with the brake system and electrics.
For 4% of Czech liftback owners, car repairs were free (under warranty). The rest of the motorists were forced to pay from £300 to £510 (from 34,086 to 57,946 rubles). More than half of the cars (60%) spent only one day in the service. However, for 20% of drivers, car repairs dragged on for more than a week.
In Russia, prices for a Czech car now vary greatly depending on the year of manufacture, configuration and mileage. For example, a 2011 liftback will cost about 750,000 rubles. Newer cars cost more than 1,000,000 rubles.
Ford Focus

The Ford Focus hatchback is one of the most popular cars on the used car market in Russia. However, this model also got into the British anti-rating of the most unreliable cars. So, 34% of the surveyed owners of this model complained of numerous problems with the car. The main complaints of drivers are related to the operation of the suspension. However, motorists also complained about unreliable, in their opinion, batteries, engines and brakes.
At the same time, 6% of the owners of such a model admitted that dealers repaired their car for free, under warranty. For other drivers, the repairs cost less than £200 (22,724 rubles).

Not the best way things are with the Volvo V40 hatchback. Moreover, the study indicates that we are talking primarily about the diesel version of this model. Most often, the owners of these cars were faced with broken electronics, engine problems, as well as suspension malfunctions. As for the repair of the car, for 27% of the owners of the Volvo V40, it lasted more than a week. Most drivers were forced to pay about £500 (56,810 rubles) in the service.
If desired, the Swedish hatchback can be easily found on most sites for the sale of used cars. For a car of 2019 with low mileage, you will have to pay about 1.8 million rubles.
Mazda3 (2014–2019)
Repairing a Mazda3 hatchback with a diesel engine can hit the family budget of car owners hard. The fact is that only 17% of motorists could count on free work. In turn, 34% of drivers said that they were forced to pay £750 (85,215 rubles) for the repair of breakdowns in their Mazda3, and some motorists were forced to leave £1,500 (170,430 rubles) in the service. All the necessary work in half of the cases was completed within seven days. Another 50% of drivers waited for their cars for more than a week. The most common problems are electronics, engine, batteries.
In Russia, the Mazda 3 diesel hatchback can hardly be called a popular car. Gasoline versions of this model are in much greater demand. Moreover, the authors of the survey have no questions regarding reliability for such a modification.

Despite its considerable age, Toyota Corolla continues to be in demand in the UK secondary market. However, in Russia there are also enough ads for the sale of such machines. At the same time, the current owners of this car (27%) were not too satisfied with the reliability of the model. So, the drivers drew attention to problems with the gearbox. Also, motorists noted problems with the body and air conditioning of the car.
At the same time, all respondents said that the malfunctions were not critical and their cars remained on the move. Of course, due to the age of the car, none of the owners expected repairs under warranty. However, all the work did not hit the driver’s wallet hard. On average, Toyota Corolla owners paid about £50 (5,681 rubles) for repairs. Most of the cars (71%) left the service on the day of the call.
