Japan reports the world’s first death from the “Oz” virus

Japanese authorities said on Friday that a woman in her 70s died in Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, after contracting the Oz virus, making it the world’s first death from the tick-borne infection.

Japan’s Kyodo News Agency quoted health authorities as saying on Friday that the virus was detected in the country in 2018, and while there may be cases of infection between humans and wild animals, there has been no confirmation of the virus appearing on anyone yet.

The woman went to a medical institution in the summer of 2022 after she developed symptoms including fever and fatigue, according to the provincial government and the Ministry of Health.

She was diagnosed with pneumonia, but after her condition worsened, she was admitted to the hospital, and an engorged tick insect was found in the upper part of her right thigh, and the woman died of myocarditis 26 days after her admission to the hospital.

It is noteworthy that there is no vaccine against the Oz virus, which has not been discovered outside Japan, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Tokyo, and the institute said that infection with the virus does not necessarily lead to death, but stressed the need for further studies on its symptoms and risks.
