Wyoming Business Council Seeks Interim CEO to Lead Agency

The Wyoming Business Council Board of Directors announced it is searching for an experienced executive to serve as interim chief executive officer in Cheyenne. The leadership search aims to provide operational stability while the state prepares for a permanent CEO search during a significant governmental transition.

The interim appointment is projected to last approximately nine to 12 months. Board members are accepting applications on a rolling basis until the position is filled, with intentions to name an interim leader as quickly as possible. The vacancy follows the departure of CEO Josh Dorrell, who led the agency for seven years.

Timing for the leadership change coincides with broader political and legislative shifts across Wyoming. The state is preparing for a new gubernatorial administration in January 2027, while the Legislature evaluates potential modifications to the council’s governing statutes and core programs.

Steering Economic Development Through State Transitions

Board leaders emphasize that the agency’s daily functions and statewide partnerships must continue without interruption despite the leadership shift. The appointed executive will report directly to the Board while coordinating closely with agency staff, outgoing and incoming state administrations, lawmakers, and regional partners.

“The Business Council’s work doesn’t stop because we’re in a transition. We have a great team and strong partners all over Wyoming, and they’re the ones carrying this forward,” said Derek Smith, Co-Chair, WBC Board of Directors. “Our priority is steady, trusted leadership that keeps that work moving and sets up the next permanent CEO to succeed.”

The mandate for the interim executive centers on maintaining operational continuity, preserving employee confidence, and building foundational groundwork for incoming state leadership. At the same time, the role is structured to leave final strategic decisions regarding long-term direction in the hands of the future governor and the Board.

Candidate Requirements and Application Details

To qualify for the Cheyenne-based role, applicants must demonstrate senior-level economic development experience, a record of guiding organizations through transition, and strong credibility among elected officials, local enterprises, and regional stakeholders. The board noted that experience across multiple states or territories is especially valued.

While the position is headquartered in Cheyenne, flexible work arrangements may be considered, though regular travel throughout the state is required. Interested candidates must submit a formal cover letter, a resume, and three professional references via email to [email protected]. Inquiries regarding the position can be directed to Operations Director Chava Case by phone at 307.777.2823.
