2024-01-01 06:47:02

The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) has issued a yellow rain alert for the provinces of Liège, Namur and Luxembourg from Monday at 10:00 p.m.

The warning is valid until Tuesday 10:00 p.m. for Liège and Namur while it extends until Wednesday 10:00 p.m. for Luxembourg.

Between Monday evening and Tuesday evening, accumulations of 25 to 40 liters of water per square meter are expected south of the Sambre and Meuse furrow. They could “very locally exceed 50 l/m2”, warns the IRM.

Between Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening, “another 15 to 35 additional l/m2” are expected, especially in the south of the country.

The provinces of Namur, Liège and Luxembourg are placed on yellow alert. In the other provinces, “the threshold for a warning is just not reached”, underlines the IRM. The amounts of precipitation that will fall there in the next three to four days will remain significant, warns the institute.

“The situation should be monitored closely because this warning could be extended to other provinces and/or extended over time.”

The move to the next alert level (orange) “cannot be ruled out in the south of the country either”.

Weather forecast

On this New Year’s Day, the sky will initially still be cloudy with showers. Then the tendency for showers will fade somewhat and more sunny spells will form. During the afternoon, however, the cloudiness will increase from the French border, and some light rain or drizzle may already occur mainly in Wallonia. The maxima will be close to 4 degrees in Hautes-Fagnes, between 7 and 9 degrees in the center and around 9 or 10 degrees at sea. The fairly strong southwest wind will decrease somewhat to become moderate the afternoon noon. At sea, the fairly strong to strong west-southwest wind will become moderate to fairly strong from the southwest. Gusts could initially still reach 70 km/h, but they will be between 50 and 60 km/h during the day.

In the evening, the sky will be overcast with periods of rain or drizzle. During the next night, an area of rain will cross the country from west to east. At the end of the night, the weather will become drier in the west of the country but cloudiness will remain abundant. The minimums, reached in the evening, will be between 3 degrees in Hautes-Fagnes and 8 degrees at the seaside. The wind will turn to the south and gradually strengthen to become generally quite strong, and sometimes even strong on the coast, then it will turn to southwest at the end of the night. Gusts of up to 70 km/h could be observed at the end of the night.

Tomorrow Tuesday, while the area of rain from the previous night will quickly evacuate towards Germany, a new area of abundant precipitation will reach our regions from France during the day. Accumulations over 24 hours could therefore reach 20 to 25 l/m², and more locally 40 to 50 l/m² in the south-east of the country. It will be very mild with maximums of 8 to 13 degrees. The southwesterly wind will be quite strong to strong with gusts of 80 km/h or even locally a little more.

Wednesday, the weather will remain choppy with quite a bit of wind, numerous cloudy areas and regular showers. These will be more numerous in Ardennes and Belgian Lorraine where accumulations could again exceed 25 l/m² in 24 hours. The maxima will oscillate between 6 and 11 degrees, under a (fairly) strong west to southwest wind. Gusts of 70 km/h or locally more.

THURSDAY, the weather will initially be slightly variable with sunny spells but also one or another shower. Then, a new area of precipitation should reach our regions from the southwest. However, the exact timing and its intensity must still be confirmed. It will be a little cooler with maximums of 5 to 9 degrees, under a moderate southwest wind.

Friday, the weather could be generally dry but cloudy and still a little cooler. Maximum of 4 to 8 degrees.
