Yellow Rain Alert and Weekend Weather Forecast: Rains, Showers, and Floods in Luxembourg and West Flanders

2023-11-09 19:20:05

The yellow rain alert announced this Thursday afternoon in the province of Luxembourg has finally been lifted, the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) indicated this Thursday at 6:45 p.m. This decision is explained by the fact that the precipitation, forecast to be intense on Friday and Saturday, will be “more isolated” or because “the probability of reaching the threshold values will be lower”.

The hydrometry department of the Public Service of Wallonia (SPW) nevertheless indicated this Thursday that the Haute Semois, the Moyenne Semois and the Vierre, all located in the province of Luxembourg, are on pre-flood alert due to this new line showers forecast. The SPW recommends “stay cautious near areas of concentration of rain, small rivers, and at the head of the basin”.

West Flanders on yellow alert

The IRM also announced that West Flanders will finally be on yellow alert from this Thursday afternoon until Friday 5:00 p.m. due to the expected precipitation in the region. Total rainfall could reach 10 to 25 or even 30 l/m² in 24 hours over around a quarter of the province. “This is therefore a borderline case for yellow vigilance, but the problems already present in the Westhoek come into consideration”specifies the MRI.

The governor of West Flanders decided this Thursday to activate the provincial crisis management plan due to a risk of flooding in his territory. This is the second time this week that the Westhoek firefighters have been on war footing to prevent flooding in the region. Flooding already occurred at the start of the week in Watou, mainly due to heavy rainfall in the north of France.
