The People Power Party held a general meeting of elected candidates on the 16th to discuss how to fill the leadership vacuum caused by the crushing defeat in the general election, but failed to reach any specific conclusions other than “Let’s hold a national convention quickly.” There is an assessment that the leadership of the ruling party is virtually in a vacuum.

At the People Power Party-elected general meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul this morning, attendees agreed to form a ‘working emergency committee’ to prepare for the national convention. According to the party constitution and rules, the formation of a non-presidential committee is essential for a national convention to elect a party leader. However, it has not been decided who will serve as emergency committee chairman or when the national convention will be held.

At the general meeting, there was an opinion that Yoon Jae-ok, floor leader and acting party leader, should serve as emergency chair, but no consensus was reached. If floor leader Yoon does not take on the role of chairperson of the emergency room committee or nominate someone else, the chairperson of the emergency room committee will be nominated by the new floor leader who will be elected next month. Acting Secretary General Bae Jun-young said in a phone call, “We plan to elect a new floor leader by the 10th of next month at the latest.” The new floor leader will be selected by the elected officials and begin work when the 22nd National Assembly opens in June. If floor leader Yoon prepares right away, a new party leader will be able to be elected through a national convention in June, and if the new floor leader proceeds, it is expected that a national convention will be held in July.

As candidates for the new floor leader, four-term senior figures such as Reps. Kim Do-eup and Park Dae-chul are being mentioned first. Rep. Kim is classified as a non-Yun (non-Yun Seok-yeol) faction, and Rep. Park is classified as a pro-Yoon (pro-Yun Seok-yeol) faction. Representative Kim Tae-ho, who was also elected to his fourth term as Biyun, is also considered a candidate. In the third term, lawmakers Lee Cheol-gyu, Lee Yang-soo, Song Eon-seok, and Choo Kyung-ho are also being mentioned.

Of the two-hour general meeting held on this day, one hour was devoted to self-introductions by first-time elected candidates. One attendee said, “The party is in an emergency situation, but it’s so leisurely.” A leadership official in the National Assembly said, “It was a meeting that also served as a meeting, so there was no atmosphere for serious conversations.”

There were also concerns among those elected in the metropolitan area. Representative Yoon Sang-hyeon (Incheon-dong, Michuhol-eul) said, “It should become an emergency committee that deals with reflection and innovation. He also said, “We should not get caught up in discussions like this about ‘who will be the next party leader?’” and “The emergency committee should also revise the ‘100% party membership rule’ clause.” The People Power Party revised the party constitution and rules in December 2022 and changed the public opinion poll, which was based on 70% of party member votes and 30% of the public opinion poll, to 100% of party member votes. It was to appoint a pro-Yoongye party leader.

Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo (Seongnam Bundang, Gyeonggi Province) said, “Most of the 140 unsuccessful candidates are from the metropolitan area. “If we listen to what they say, change the party and form leadership accordingly, the direction of change will be in line with the public sentiment,” he said. President-elect Kim Jae-seop (Seoul Dobong-gap) also said, “It is very important for someone who can embody the public sentiment in the metropolitan area to take office.”

Floor Leader Yoon said, “There was an opinion to listen to the opinions of those who were unsuccessful, so we are planning to push it forward around the 19th. We will find out how many people can attend and decide whether to do it or not.”
