Vienna (OTS) – In the debate surrounding specialist training for general and family medicine, extending the duration of training in general practitioner offices and primary care facilities (“teaching practice”) is, from JAMÖ’s point of view, the most important and sensible step. In international comparison, it is known that a longer period of teaching practice is necessary for high-quality training and is more attractive. General and family medicine can only be learned in general medical practices. The extension in the form of teaching practice planned in the current draft of the amendment to the Medical Act can take away the worries of prospective colleagues about setting up shop and is therefore a contribution to combating the “shortage of doctors” in the health insurance sector.

The JAMÖ therefore sees the planned introduction of specialists in general and family medicine with an extension of the teaching practice period as urgently necessary to ensure long-term general medical care in Austria.
