Four days. Jérémy Wasson’s only professional experience did not last much longer. The observation internship of this first-year student at the Special School of Public Works, Building and Industry (ESTP) was to last two months, in the Urbaine de Travaux company (subsidiary of the construction giant Fayat) . On May 28, 2020, he was sent alone to the roof of the construction site of the unified command center for the SNCF lines in eastern Paris, in Pantin (Seine-Saint-Denis). At 1:30 p.m., he fell while passing through a poorly protected smoke extraction hopper – a hole left in the ground awaiting development. He died two days later, at age 21.

Jérémy’s accident left the major building school in a state of shock. “This is the worst thing that has happened to me in thirty years of higher education”, expresses Joël Cuny, general director of ESTP, director of training at the time. The amazement gave way to vibrant tributes. A little short, though… The ESTP did not become a civil party to the trial, regrets Frédéric Wasson, Jérémy’s father, who emphasizes that “Fayat is the sponsor company of the promotion of [s]we son…”, or that, from 2021, Urbaine de Travaux will take on dozens of interns from the school.
Interns, vocational high school students undergoing professional training, apprentices… Young people pay a heavy price among deaths at work: thirty-six workers under the age of 25 did not survive a workplace accident in 2022, according to the latest report from the National Health Insurance Fund (CNAM). This is 29% more than in 2019. And again this only concerns employees of the general system. The CNAM also emphasizes that, compared to other work accidents, these are more accidents “classic, that is to say excluding illnesses and suicides”and road accidents.
“Total irresponsibility”
The inexperience of these young people, when it is not compensated by reinforced support, partly explains this excess mortality. Some 15% of serious and fatal accidents occur during the first three months following employment, and more than half of employees under the age of 25 who die at work had less than one year of seniority in the position.
Tom Le Duault lost his life on Monday October 25, 2021. This technical-commercial BTS student then begins his fourth short contract in the LDC Bretagne slaughterhouse, in Lanfains (Côtes-d’Armor). His mother has worked there for twenty-nine years, and he hopes to put some money aside. As during his first experiences, he is “to cut”, where he takes care of canning poultry. That morning, an employee was absent. Tom has to replace it in the refrigerator where the cases of meat are stored. He is supposed to stack the boxes there with a stacker, a lifting device.
