Youth Empowerment Films and Songs Competition: Mentoring Arab Youth Towards Resilience and Hope for a Better Future

Mentor Arabia launched the fourth edition of its regional initiative, entitled “Youth Empowerment Films and Songs Competition,” during a ceremony in Beirut.

The theme of the fourth session of the competition is “Youth Mental Health,” which aims to shed light on the life and psychological challenges faced by young people and the importance of resilience in the face of them and providing them with hope for a better future. The course also aims to stimulate art, creativity and innovation, spread awareness to prevent dangerous behaviors among young people, encourage them to follow healthy lifestyles, inspire them to excel in their professional careers, and provide them with guidance and guidance opportunities.

The competition targets talented Arab youth between the ages of 18 and 30, and is held in cooperation with Anghami, Zain Jordan, the Royal Film Commission of Jordan, the Royal Society for Health Awareness, and a number of universities, academies, youth institutions, and private companies.

The competition also includes five basic categories: the narrative short films category, the documentary short films category, the promotional films category, the films under development category, and the songs category.

The competition’s jury committees include an elite group of creators, artists, and specialists: Ahmed Al-Khatib, Amin Dorra, Bashar Al-Shatti, Hamad Al-Sarraf, Darren Salam, Daniela Rahma, Rami Koussa, Rahma Riyad, Rahma Suleiman, Sam Lahoud, Souad Massi, Saeed Al-Marouk, Shaker Khazal, Sophie. Boutros, Issam Youssef, Fayez Al-Saeed, Qais Sheikh Najib, Carla Aad, Karis Bashar, Lamia Qaiqa, Luyan Lulian, Muhammad Al-Basiouni, Muhammad Hefzy, Muhammad Mishish, Michel Fadel, Milad Abi Raad, Nassif Zaytoun, Nizar Francis, and Hend Sabry.

The closing ceremony of the competition will be held in the fall of 2023 in Amman, and will include announcing the winners and holding dialogue sessions with members of the jury to inspire and guide young people. A series of technical training workshops will also be held for young people by professionals and specialists in directing, writing, acting, composing and other related fields.

The idea of ​​the competition was originated in 2017 by Soraya Ismail, member of the Board of Trustees and CEO of Mentor Arabia, actor Qais Sheikh Najib, and actress Nelly Karim – members of the Friends of Mentor Arabia committee, in view of the urgent need to support young Arab artistic talents and unleash their creativity and opinions. Until the idea turned into a regional initiative and a pioneering platform that seeks to encourage young talents to create and develop short films and purposeful awareness songs, in addition to creating a safe space for young people to express their fears, aspirations and opinions on pressing social and humanitarian issues.

The competition was launched in cooperation with more than 80 strategic partners from local, regional and international organizations and institutions, including Anghami, the Royal Film Commission of Jordan, Zain Jordan, the Royal Society for Health Awareness, IEFTA, Sundance Festival, and a number of governmental, non-governmental and media bodies, universities, academies and private sector companies. The initiative was very popular, as the number of participants exceeded 4,000 young people and 32 winners, as the competition not only honors the winners, but also provides them with training courses at the hands of artists and professionals in the field, in which more than 200 young men and women participated.

The closing ceremony of the first session of the competition was also held in Jordan in 2017 under the patronage of Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II of Jordan, the closing ceremony of the second session was held in Kuwait under the patronage of the Minister of Information and Youth, and the closing ceremony of the third session was held in Amman in 2022 in the presence of Queen Silvia of Sweden.

“Mentor Arabia” is a regional non-governmental, non-profit organization that seeks to empower children and youth and protect them from risky behaviors to enjoy a healthy life and make sound decisions. It was established in 2006 and its Board of Trustees is chaired by Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz. It is part of Mentor International, which was founded in 1994 and is headed by Queen Silvia of Sweden, and has branches in Sweden, Latvia, Germany, the United States of America, and Jordan.
