Yurii Tkach detained in Vienna as Ukrainian MFA intervenes

Yurii Tkach was detained by security forces in Vienna, Austria, while his colleague, Yaroslav Bondarenko, remains missing, according to reporting by Ukrainska pravda.

Heorhij Tychyj, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the Ukrainian embassy in Austria intervened after the incident came to light, requesting formal explanations and consular access from Austrian authorities.

Diplomatic Interventions and Consular Access in Vienna

Following initial diplomatic inquiries, a Ukrainian consul secured access to Tkach and spoke with him directly. Despite this consular contact, Austrian security authorities continue to hold the journalist.

The newsroom of Ukrainska pravda issued a statement condemning the detention as unlawful. Editors demanded his immediate release alongside an explanation from Austrian security authorities regarding the reasons for the intervention.

The situation surrounding Tkach’s travel companion remains unclear. Tkach had traveled to Vienna alongside Bondarenko to carry out professional duties. Ukrainska pravda stated that it has no information regarding Bondarenko’s current whereabouts or safety, prompting appeals to locate him.

Calls for International Protection

While the detained journalist does not maintain direct communication with his home newsroom, he is in contact with a lawyer. Ukrainska pravda has informed the Ukrainian embassy in Austria and the Austrian embassy in Ukraine regarding the developments.
