The primary catalyst behind Washington’s urgent push involves mounting pressure over global energy markets. Ukrainian attacks targeting Russian diesel fuel refineries have contributed to punishing petroleum prices in the United States and worldwide, prompting the Trump administration to seek an immediate stabilization of energy flows.

Addressing the U.N. Security Council, Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s unyielding stance. Russia reaffirmed an “unconditional commitment to achieving the objectives of its special military operation,” while suggesting Moscow would not accept any temporary ceasefire. “Europe, whatever it thinks, just wants to get a pause, and it wants to use it to pump the Kyiv regime with weapons,” Lavrov told the council.
