🧬 Be careful with intermittent fasting: risk of cardiovascular death

2024-03-24 07:00:05

Intermittent fasting, a practice of limiting food intake to specific periods of the day, is growing in popularity, particularly for its potential benefits on weight loss and metabolic health. Among its variations, 16:8 intermittent fasting, where meals are confined to one window (In architecture and construction, a window is a bay, an opening in a wall or a section…) of eight hours (Hour is a unit of measurement 🙂 per day, is widely adopted.

However, a new study presented during the scientific sessions of l’Epidemiology and Prevention: Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health of the’American Heart Association (The American Heart Association (AHA) is an American non-profit organization that…) has Chicago (Chicago is a megacity in the United States, located in the northern part of the Midwest,…) threw a light (Light is all electromagnetic waves visible to the eye…) worrying about this practice.

According to this preliminary research, which involved more than 20,000 adults in the United States, followers of 16:8 intermittent fasting are at risk of death from disease (Disease is an alteration of the functions or health of a living organism, animal, etc.) cardiovascular 91% higher than those who do not adopt this practice. Additionally, in people who already have heart disease or cancer (Cancer is a disease characterized by abnormal cell proliferation…)this risk is further accentuated, with a 66% increase in the risk of death from heart disease or stroke (A stroke, sometimes called a stroke…) for those following a diet (For cultural diets practiced by humans see practice…) limited to an 8-10 hour eating window per day. Dr. Victor Wenze Zhong, lead author of the study and director of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University School of MedicineUniversité (A university is an establishment of higher education whose objective is…) Jiao Tong de Shanghai (Shanghai (Chinese: 上海; pinyin shànghÇŽi pronunciation;…), stressed that this discovery was surprising. Indeed, although intermittent fasting is touted for its short-term benefits, this study clearly shows that shorter meal duration, compared to a window of 12 to 16 hours per day, is not associated with increased extended lifespan.

It is therefore essential, according to Dr Zhong, that patients, particularly those suffering from heart disease or cancer, are informed of this association between 16:8 intermittent fasting and an increased risk of cardiovascular death. This encourages a more cautious and personalized approach to dietary recommendations, based on individual health status and the most recent scientific evidence.

It is important to note that although this study identifies an association between intermittent fasting and cardiovascular death, it does not necessarily mean that intermittent fasting causes these deaths. Further research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms underlying this association and to determine whether these findings are consistent across different populations.

In conclusion, although intermittent fasting may offer potential short-term benefits, particularly in terms of weight loss, weight (Weight is the force of gravity, of gravitational and inertial origin, exerted by…), it is now clear that a more cautious approach is needed, particularly for people with cardiovascular disease or cancer. Dietary recommendations must be adapted according to each individual (Wiktionary is a free open source dictionary project similar to Wikipedia (both…) and the latest scientific advances.
