An era is ending at 1. FC Union Berlin: long-time coach Urs Fischer is leaving the club. After 14 games without a win, the Iron Men are in last place in the Bundesliga. The Swiss has been the coach in Köpenick since summer 2018.

Urs Fischer is no longer the coach of 1. FC Union Berlin. The Swiss and Union Berlin are going their separate ways after more than five years together. According to the club, Fischer and club president Dirk Zingler mutually agreed on this on Monday. The club officially announced the decision on Wednesday morning.

Fischer: “The last few weeks have taken a lot of energy”

After five successful seasons with promotion to the Bundesliga and three qualifications for international competition, the Unioners are playing against relegation this season. Last weekend’s 4-0 defeat was Union’s 14th winless game in a row.

“The last few weeks have taken a lot of energy. We tried a lot, the team put in a lot, but it didn’t pay off in results,” the club quoted Fischer as saying in a statement. Together we have now come to the conclusion that now is the time to take a different path, explained Zingler.

With Fischer, his assistant coach Markus Hoffmann is also leaving 1. FC Union. Union U19 coach Marco Grote will be the interim coach until further notice. He is supported by assistant trainer Marie-Louise Eta.
