The share of French people depriving themselves of food has increased from 12 to 16% in six months, according to a Crédoc study revealed by franceinfo.

According to a study published by Crédoc on Wednesday May 17 and revealed by franceinfo, 16% of French people declared at the end of last year that they could not eat enough. This proportion has increased significantly in recent months, according to the results of this survey by the Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions.

>> Inflation: despite the government operation, prices have “increased slightly” in three brands, according to UFC-Que Choisir

In less than six months, the proportion of those who deprive themselves of food has increased by 4 points, which is considerable. This is the direct consequence of the rise in food prices on the shelves, of inflation that exceeds 10% on certain products. To fully understand the dimension of the phenomenon, in 2016, there were almost half as many people in food insecurity.

Refrain from buying certain products

The survey also shows that when the French have the means to eat their fill, almost 1 in 2 still admits that they do not have access to all the food they would like. As prices have become unaffordable in relation to their income, they have no choice but to deprive themselves of meat, fish or even fruit and vegetables.

While these deprivations remained rather marginal when inflation was maintained at less than 2%, there too, they have increased considerably in recent months according to this study. The French, suddenly, adapt: they buy first-price products, not always of good quality, and fewer fresh products which are more expensive.

Food insecurity has health consequences within families. For households with children, the Crédoc shows that it is mainly women who are exposed to lack of food or even young people. There are 24% of under 40s in food insecurity compared to 7% of 60/69 year olds.
